You need a Spanish bank account for rent, utilities, tax payments and Bizum (instant payments between phones, used everywhere). Banks distinguish between residents and non-residents.

What you need

  • Passport.
  • NIE (most banks require it; some open non-resident accounts with a passport only).
  • Proof of address and, for residents, your TIE or EU registration certificate.
  • Proof of income or employment, because of anti-money-laundering checks.

Resident vs non-resident

Non-resident accounts are for people who live abroad but have property or bills in Spain. You must prove non-residence (a certificate from the tax agency, or other evidence). Once you become resident, tell the bank.

Fees

Spanish banks often charge monthly fees unless you pay in a salary, keep a minimum balance or use their cards. Compare conditions.

Online banks and fintechs

EU-based online banks and payment apps work for many daily needs. Some Spanish direct debits still require a Spanish IBAN (starting ES), so a local account remains useful.

Bizum

Linked to Spanish bank accounts, Bizum lets you send money with a phone number. Landlords, shops and friends will expect it.
