Is Spain safe?

Spain has low rates of violent crime compared with most of Europe and the Americas. The main risks for visitors are petty theft and the summer heat.

Petty theft

Pickpocketing is common in busy tourist areas: Barcelona’s metro and Las Ramblas, Madrid’s Puerta del Sol and metro, and crowded beaches. Keep phones out of back pockets and bags zipped and in front of you, and don’t leave phones on café tables.

Common scams

  • “Someone spilled something on you” distractions.
  • Rosemary sprigs offered outside cathedrals in Seville and Granada, followed by a demand for money.
  • Fake petition clipboards.
  • Fake police asking to check your wallet.
  • Rental scams asking for deposits before a viewing.

Heat

Summer heatwaves are dangerous, especially inland. Drink water, avoid the midday sun, and check AEMET (the state weather agency) for heat warnings.

Nightlife

Watch your drink in busy clubs and resorts, and use licensed taxis.

Emergencies

Call 112 for police, ambulance or fire. Report theft at a police station (you can start the report online) to get a document for insurance.
