What happens
People gather on beaches with picnics and drinks. At midnight they jump over small fires or wade into the sea and jump seven waves. In Catalonia it is the Revetlla de Sant Joan, with coca de Sant Joan cake and fireworks everywhere; in A Coruña the beaches fill with bonfires and grilled sardines.
